Spy photo of the M's trying to stay dry during the rain delay. (Wolan)
Inning of Oddities

The fourth inning would prove to be a source of some unusual and memorable moments.

In the top of the inning, the rain simply becomes too much as the umpire declares a rain delay. The pause in the action would last for about 10 minutes until the rains subside. After getting soaked, both teams return to the field, but the HBs could not get anything going in their frame, going down quickly to end the inning.

Bottom of the fourth, the HBs defense manage to pull an odd-ball play. With a runner on first, the batters hit a ground to the mound. A-WOL fields it and tosses it to first for the out. At this moment, Austin realizes that the base runner from first is not going to make it to second quickly enough. So, he fires the ball to Kevin on second to the reverse double play. “You don’t see that everyday… or ever” comment A-WOL.

The M’s would scratch together two more runs to make it a 6-12 affair. These runs would come in on a most unusual play. With two outs and runners on second and third, the bare-footer Merlot catcher hits a blooper into shallow left field. With the infield playing in and the outfielders confined to the 60 foot mark, the ball was out of everyone’s reach and lands for the base hit, driving in two runs.

In the fifth, the HBs would get those two runs right back as Kevin and Pierre score on a base hit and SAC fly by Pierre and Corbett, respectively. The HBs defense would flex their skills to help keep the M’s scoreless in the fifth. With two outs and a runner on first, the batter hits a line drive to left field. With the runner from first trying to advance to third on the play, John (LF) and Jonathan (3B) connect for the easy 7-5 tag out at third to end the inning.

A-WOL was so delighted with the outcome of that play he did a flying kung-fu kick near third after trying to back-up the play. Unknown to A-WOL at the time, the kick nearly hit the umpire. “I saw it coming, so I kept my distance” said the ump in response to A-WOL’s on field antics.

Through-out the course of the inning, the rains had returned. After hearing the sound of distance rumble and realizing that conditions were not going to improve anytime soon, the umpire decided to call the game after 5 innings due to rain. The HBs lose their seventh game of the season 8-12.

Despite the lose, the HBs managed to not only limit the run production of the league’s number one team to their third fewest all season, they also came the closest to winning the game since the M’s first game of the season against “The Conquistadors”.

Post-Game Reaction

After the game, A-WOL had a few bones to pick regarding the inconsistancy of the "ground rules" at Daly Field. You can read what he had to say in this game's commentary.

Highlights

  • John: 3 for 3 (3B) with 2 RBIS and 2 runs scored.
  • Kevin: 2 for 3 (2B, 3B) with 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored.
  • Pierre: 2 for 3 (2B, 3B) with 2 RBIs and one run scored.

  • Webgem: diving catch by the M’s left fielder to rob Jonathan of an extra base hit. (3rd)
  • Webgem: over the head catch by John on deep left field. (3rd)
  • Webgem: Reverse double play by Andy, Austin and Kevin. (4th)
  • Webgem: John to Jonathan relay for the tag-out at third. (5th)

  • Though there was no post-game handshake, both teams opted to wave at each instead. Evidentially, the rain soured the idea.
